Who am I to speak to the awfulness that we are experiencing in our country right now, but how can I possibly not make mention of it? As a white South African who grew up during the era of apartheid - when racism, protests, police brutality and riots were at the order of the day – who am I to speak to this subject without offending someone, or saying the wrong thing at this hyper-sensitive moment?
Instead of me pontificating, I am reminded that the words spoken by Nelson Mandela ring more true today than ever before.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite….. man's goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished.”

There is much work to be done to make our cities and towns truly just for all. And it starts with me listening, educating myself about how to be a better ally to the black community, and doing the uncomfortable work of understanding where bias still exists within me.
